Ken has lived on Flinders Island for 23 years and has had his fishing licence that entire time. Ken’s catch consists of Garfish, King George Whiting and Flathead, using a mesh nets and/or long lines. You will probably see Ken launching his boat from the Lady Barron Wharf each week to fill his quota as the scale fish season is open all year round – except for one month at the end of January to February. Each fresh catch, weighing up to 650kgs is flown off the island using Sharp Airlines or a charter airline, depending on freight availability. The Garfish is sold into the Footscray Markets in Melbourne (however Ken would prefer if they had the same auction system as in Sydney). In Sydney they go to auction and have a bell that rings after 10 seconds so the fisherman is guaranteed the best price for his catch.
